Question About The 400 Blows

Do you think that if Antoine and Rene weren't friends that Antoine would still be getting in trouble with stealing, skipping school, and running away?

Yes, I do. I think Antoine doesn't like authority figures telling him what to do. For this reason, Antoine has a side to his personality that just likes to rebel. Having said, this I don't think Antoine is a horrible child. While he is rebellious I don't think he would have started drinking or stealing from people if Rene did not encourage Antoine to steal and drink.-Raquel

  1. Yes, I believe that Antoine would still be getting into trouble if he wasn't friends with Rene. I believe that Antoine gets in trouble because he isn't getting attention from his family, and I see him acting out as a way for him to get attention. -Megan McCarthy

  2. This is a fascinating question, with some interesting responses. We're going to talk about this in class this week. MImi

  3. I believe he would still get into trouble no matter what. He doesn't have anyone guiding him on what he should do. He's not always going to know right from wrong. He'll wander around and cause some type of mischief that would probably lead him to where he was at the end of the film.

  4. Yes, I do believe that Antoine would still get into trouble, as he doesn't have any support at home (shown when he tries to get his homework done and his mother makes it clear that it isn't a priority) or in school. He uses these as tactics to get attention from his parents.

    1. Yes, because the problem wasn't Rene it was Antoine's home life situation. As many people before me commented, he acts out by stealing and skipping school because no one really pays attention to him other than to reprimand him. He's a leader because he's not enticed by other people to do these things he does them by himself and in many cases he's not doing anything bad. He starts out with good intentions but it never turns out the way that he wants. I felt like his friendship with Rene in many ways saved him. Especially when Antoine left home and didn't have a place to go. Rene offered him a place to stay and food. - Sarai
